Brief introduction to Ayurveda

Yoga, which got more and more popular in the recent years, has a sister science, called Ayurveda. Both originated 5`000 years ago in India where the Hindu mythology gave gods 2 methods of healing:

Yoga to heal the spirit
Ayurveda to heal the body & mind, the oldest health system in the world

To lead a balanced life Yoga & Ayurveda are practiced.
The ancient knowledge of Ayurveda conveys well-proven tools to rebalance body & mind to allow oneself to heal. "Ayur" stands for life, "veda" for the knowledge of the Vedas, hence Ayurveda is the eternal knowledge of life.

According to Ayurveda everything is comprised of 5 elements (ether/space, air, fire, water, earth). Each person has a unique combination of these elements determined at the time of birth. Based on your dosha* there can be a combination of mental and physical imbalance. These imbalances are the major cause of illness. The goal of Ayurvedic illness management is to bring back harmony among the doshas. If a dosha for example increases in our body, Ayurveda suggests to decrease it in order to restore a healthy balance according to our constitution.

Ayurveda uses many tools/techniques to achieve balance:

Herbs and spices
Oil treatments
Pranayama breathing
Nutrition and fasting
Various lifestyle modifications

*The 3 basic doshas are: Vata (air), Pitta (fire), Kapha (earth). Each of us is predominantly of one or a combination of these 3 doshas.
